My husband found this amazing website that will show exactly what is in all of the products we buy. One of the main things that motivated me to make my own products is the frustration with the poor labeling and standards for products as they currently exist. This video demonstrates how "fragrance" is used as a loop hole for companies to use pretty much anything without listing the chemical.
This website is really helpful to recognize what is truly in all of these products that are so heavily marketed to us and that are generally assumed to be safe.
It is also important to point out that even generally safe and natural products in higher doses can be irritants. My friends have often heard of my own mishaps when I am testing out my own products - freezing in a peppermint or eucalyptus bath with too high concentration of essential oils or overheating my skin with excessive amounts of citrus oil. I do not test on critters but I certainly test on myself.. most of the time with delightful success but even with my all natural ingredients I experience the occasional oopsy.
At least such overdoses can be easily cured by washing them off and making a note to self about quantities where as some of the scary stuff hidden in seemingly harmless daily products are actually carcinogenic or serious asthma triggers, etc. Bottom line, know what is in what you are putting on and in your body. Your health and the health of your family is worth the time it takes to read a label or do a little research. :c)

Wow, that is horrifying! I have always had problems with heavy scents, it is always especially bad on airplanes where you can't get away into fresh air. I am surprised that they are not required to report what checmicals they use to at least an oversight group.
Isn't it?! Synthetic fragrances alone are pretty awful things, like you suggested with your sensitivities, Carol, but to hide other crazy stuff in there behind that name is so deceitful.
I've seen products that omit ingredients based on trade secret as well. They listed all of the natural, lovely sounding ingredients and then put a "...." It all seemed cute and romantic but those few dots hid some pretty awful chemicals.
